Press Release from January 20, 2023
January 19, 2023, marks an important step forward for Lhoist CalCC project: the Grant Agreement signing ceremony with European Climate Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) was held during Financing Innovative Clean Tech Conference in Brussels. Our ambition for our Réty plant in France is to capture more than 600,000 tons of CO2 per year starting in 2028 through CryocapTM, a Carbon Capture technology developed by Air Liquide.
The Lhoist Group, global leader in lime, dolime and minerals, is committed to an ambitious policy of innovation in decarbonizing its activities.
Under this ambition, the Lhoist Group has launched the "CalCC" project to decarbonize its Réty plant, in partnership with Air Liquide, which has state-of-the-art know-how and advanced expertise in CO2 capture technologies. The project involves the construction of a unit to capture the CO2 contained in the lime kilns exhaust gases. The captured CO2 would be concentrated, purified, and compressed using a cryogenic process, CryocapTM, developed by Air Liquide, then be transported to a CO2 liquefaction, temporary storage, and export platform under development in Dunkirk (D'Artagnan project). The CO2 would be shipped for geological storage in the North Sea. The objective of Lhoist and Air Liquide is to start up the CryocapTM unit in 2028 in Réty, making this site the first plant in the world to produce decarbonized lime on an industrial scale.
The CalCC project, a winner of the European Green Deal Innovation Fund, reached an important milestone on January 19, 2023, when Lhoist and the European Climate Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) signed the Grant Agreement. The transport of CO2 by pipeline between the Chaux et Dolomies du Boulonnais Réty site and Dunkirk would benefit from a strong synergy with Eqiom's K6 project in Lumbres, also a winner of the European Innovation Fund.
" The Lhoist Group is proud to be at the forefront of the lime industry decarbonization. By 2028, our Réty plant would be the first carbon-neutral lime plant in the world. Our partnership with Air Liquide, shows our commitment to innovation and sustainability of our global operations. We know some challenges are still ahead but with continuous support of the European Union and national authorities. We are confident we can achieve our journey towards decarbonization. "
